Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get started with Storage Trimmer?

Open the app and grant Photos library access when prompted. Then click "Scan Library." The app will analyse your library and group duplicate and similar photos for your review.

Why does Storage Trimmer need access to my Photos library?

The app needs read and write access to scan your photos for duplicates and to delete items you choose to remove. Access is only used within the app — your photos are never uploaded or shared with anyone.

How does Storage Trimmer find duplicates?

The app uses perceptual hashing and Apple's Vision framework to compare images entirely on your Mac. It identifies exact duplicates as well as visually similar photos — such as burst shots or lightly edited versions of the same image.

Will deleting duplicates affect my iCloud Photo Library?

Yes. Storage Trimmer uses Apple's standard Photos API, so deletions sync to iCloud just as if you deleted the photos directly in the Photos app. Deleted items move to your Recently Deleted album, where they remain for 30 days before being permanently removed.

Can I undo a deletion?

Yes, within 30 days. Deleted photos move to the Recently Deleted album in the Photos app. Open Photos, go to Albums → Recently Deleted, select the items you want to restore, and click Recover. After 30 days, items are permanently deleted by macOS and cannot be recovered.

How do I grant Photos access if I accidentally denied it?

Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Photos, find Storage Trimmer in the list, and set access to Full Access. Then relaunch the app.

The scan seems slow — is that normal?

For large libraries, the first scan can take several minutes while the app builds a cache of your photos. Subsequent scans are significantly faster. Avoid putting your Mac to sleep during the initial scan.

How is Storage Trimmer different from the built-in duplicates feature in macOS Photos?

macOS Photos only detects exact duplicates. Storage Trimmer also finds visually similar photos — such as burst sequences, near-identical shots, and lightly edited versions of the same image — giving you much more control over what to keep.

Does Storage Trimmer work with videos?

Yes. The app scans both photos and videos in your library. Exact duplicate videos are identified by file size and duration. Storage Trimmer also samples multiple frames to find near-duplicate recordings that are eating your storage.

Is my data ever sent to a server?

No. All processing happens entirely on your Mac. Storage Trimmer makes no network requests. There is no account, no cloud sync, and no analytics. See the Privacy Policy for full details.
